A process is claimed for the compacting of dusts from metallurgical installations that consists of: (a) introducing the dusts, without a binder, in a humid state into the cylindrical body (5) of a hydraulic press (6), of which the outlet end has an essentially truncated shape and is terminated by a cylindrical die (8); (b) extruding the dusts across the die (8) by applying a pressure of at least 10 power 7 Pa (100 bars) via the press piston (9) of the hydraulic press (6); and (c) submitting the compacted block (10) leaving the die (8) to a superficial thermal shock for about one minute at a temp. between 300 and 400 deg.C. The installation used to put this process for compacting metallurgical plant dusts into service is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used in the recovery of dusts from metallurgical installations, in partic. dusts produced by elecric steelmaking furnaces, and allows their compacting into a more handleable form without the need for any binding agent additions.
