The coin handler is housed in an enclosure with a flat face (3) having a slot (4) to allow horizontal insertion (5) of the coin. As the coin enters it is retained on the underside of a rotating drum (21) by a magnetic bar, the coin fitting between the bar and the drum. When the coin is in place it bridges two electrical contacts (36,37) signalling the controller to start the motor (33) that rotates the drum. When the drum has rotated through approximately 180 degrees the coin encounters a stop that pushes it out of the retainer so it can fall into a conventional sorting and validation unit (100). The drum then rotates till it faces the coin slot again. ADVANTAGE - Prevents coin handling mechanism being damaged by insertion of liquids or soft object into coin slot.
