PURPOSE: To manufacture a large-area active matrix array for a large image or display unit. CONSTITUTION: This large-area active matrix array 2 is made by preparing four substrates 1, which amount subarrays 2' having active regions 11 composed of matrices of switching elements 30 with row and column conductors 41, 42 which are capable of addressing the respective switching elements 30. The row and column conductors 41, 42 terminate at connection leads 41a, 42a which extend over the active regions 11. Part 1a of each substrate 1 and mounted connection leads are removed, so as to form a new substrate edge 1'a near two adjacent edges of the active regions 11, and the substrate 1 is provided on a support 12 so that each new substrate edge which neighbors other new substrate edge 1'a forms a large-area array 2.
