A portable voice and data encryption device (3, 9) designed to be used with normal wideband telephone and cellular telephones (15), computers (13) and facsimile machines (11) to transmit voice and data in encrypted form. The V/DED (3, 9) comprises a voice and data encryption module (21), an encryption and control module (23), and a modem module (25). The modem module (25) can adapt its data rate to account for the changes in the signal strength between the sending and receiving sites. The encryption and control module (23) senses the change in data rate of the modem module (25) during transmission and synchronizes the activities of the voice and data module (21) so that the amount of data being produced for encryption and transmission matches the data rate being experienced by the modem module (25). The output of the V/DED simply connects to the wall jack of a normal PSTN, to a cellular interface, or to another digital/analog interface. The input of the V/DED (3, 9) connects with the computer (13), telephone (15), or facsimile machine (11) plugging directly into the V/DED (3, 9). |
