The gear train is particularly for automotive use, having a sunwheel on the driving shaft, planetary pinions on a carrier, and an enclosing annulus joined to a further carrier. The annulus is in halves with the teeth inclined opposite ways, and which rotate together. The halves (8, 8a) are positively joined together, typically by welding at their end faces (12), where they can be chamfered to form a V-section groove (13). The chamfers can be formed on thickened portions (14) protruding outwards, and whose height can be equal to roughly half the annulus thickness. ADVANTAGE - Simplicity of construction and needs less room in the radial direction.
