A compsn. for treating the hair contains an alpha-ketodicarboxylic acid or physiologically acceptable salt. Pref. the acid is alpha-ketoglutaric acid or a salt, in amt. of 0.1-10 wt.%, and the compsn. has pH 2-7, and is a soln., enulsion, cream, gel, powder or aerosol foam. It may also contain anionic, cationic, amphoteric, zwitterionic or nonionic surfactants, foam synergists or stabilisers, sequestrants, emulsifiers, natural substances, pigments, perfume oils, opacifiers, pearl gloss agents, etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - Use of alpha-ketodicarboxylic acids or salts to remove residues of H2O2 from the hair is claimed. Residual H2O2 damages and bleaches the hair and affects later dyeing. The compsn. is effective at alkaline and acid pH, physiologically acceptable, and stable.
