Separation of root crops, esp. sugar beet, from soil - by separating whole tubers in first screen, larger fragments in second screen and small fragments in final band screen using screens with tines

Process for separating soil from root crops consists of the following steps: a) whole tubers (6) are separated from the crop/soil mixture (29) in a first separation zone, b) the remaining material (8) passes to a second separation zone (3) in which relatively large tuber fragments (11) are separated, and c) the residual material (14) passes to a third separation zone (4) in which the remaining small tuber fragments (23) and earth (25) are separated. Also claimed is a device for carrying out the procedure with: a) a first stage having a collection conveyor (5) for the whole tubers and a conveyor (7) for the remaining mixture, b) a second stage having a collection conveyor (12) for the larger tuber fragments and a conveyor (13) for the remaining mixture, and c) a third stage with conveyors (22,24) for the separated smaller fragments and earth. USE/ADVANTAGE - Especially for cleaning sugar beet and recovering beet from mixtures of beet and soil. Fragments of tubers are recovered as well as whole tubers.
