In the TIG and MIG welding of aluminium, high-purity argon or high-purity argon/helium mixtures are used as the inert gas. In order to improve the welding process and the result obtained, the invention proposes that 80 to 250 vpm, preferably 120 to 180 vpm, of nitrous oxide are added to the inert gas.
