<p>1,188,689. Graft polymerized cotton fibres. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. 27 June, 1967, No. 29662/67. Addition to 1,126,272. Heading C3G. A process for graft polymerizing a mixture of any two of the monomers methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylic acid, or a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile or of styrene and acrylic acid on to cotton comprises (a) forming a grafting solution of the monomer mixture in a solvent with the stipulation that (i) when the monomer mixture is styrene-acrylonitrile the solvent comprises dimethylformamide, methanol and/or ethanol, and optionally up to 10% (by volume of total solvent) of water, (ii) when the monomer mixture is methyl methacrylate-acrylonitrile the solvent comprises dimethylformamide, methanol and/or ethanol, and optionally up to 35% by volume of water, and (iii) when the monomer mixture includes acrylic acid the solvent comprises methanol and/or ethanol and optionally up to 5% by volume of water, and where in- (iii) acrylonitrile monomer is present, the solvent also contains dimethylformamide; (b) immersing the cotton to be grafted in the grafting solution; and (c) while the cotton is immersed in the solution, subjecting the cotton to the action of gamma radiation at an irradiation dose rate of 1 x 10<SP>5</SP> to 7 x 10<SP>5</SP> rads/hr. for a total irradiation dose of 3 x 10<SP>5</SP> to 1 x 10<SP>6</SP> rads.</p> |
