A process is disclosed for applying a short-time pulse of a material of high energy and density on the surface of a solid body, in particular the surface of a material. The energy stored in an energy storage is supplied to an energy converter and there it is transmitted into an energy carrier to be accelerated as a gas, liquid and/or solid in the direction of the surface of the solid body, in such a way that the pulse which hits the surface of the solid body interacts with the marginal layer of the solid body and causes changes in the structure, texture and/or composition of this extremely thin marginal layer, without affecting the base material.
