HIGH EFFICIENCY LINEAR LIGHT SOURCE

A linear light source for a film scanner is disclosed which includes an elongated light integrating cavity (12), formed within a solid illumination body (14), having diffusely reflective walls (24). Light is introduced into the cavity through an input port (34), and an output beam of diffuse light is produced through a slot (30) which is generally parallel to the longitudinal axis (41) of the integrating cavity (12). In order to increase the efficiency of the light source, light is introduced into the cavity through a high collection non-imaging optical device formed as a hollow bore (33) within the illumination body (14).
