When a rope (15) is wound upon a drum (6) at a large angle of approach relative to the normal to the drum shaft, there is a tendency for the rope (15) to bunch up at one region of the drum. To overcome this problem, the drum (6) is mounted for axial movement, e.g. along rails (3,4) or along splines (42), as well as rotary movement on its axis. A fairlead (13) may be provided to reduce the angle of approach of the rope (15).

|
