METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR WIRE DRAWING

A method of and apparatus for drawing wire of high surface quality and cleanliness by avoiding slip between the wire and drawing block and thereby enabling clean coolants to he used. The apparatus comprises a plurality of dies in series and a drawing block for drawing the wire through each die. Each drawing block is driven by independently adjustable means which derive their motive power from a common source which is itself adjustable and which also provides power to a take-off reel also independently adjustable. Each of the drawing blocks has a plain cylindrical surface in driving engagement with the wire. In threading of the wire, the torque exerted by each drawing block is adjusted in sequence starting with the block associated with the first die so that the force required to draw the wire through the die and around the drawing block and any associated idler or subsequent dies and drawing blocks is a minimum. Once each of the drawing blocks and the take-off reel is set in this manner the machine can be run up to speed by adjusting power from the common source.
