PURPOSE:To form the best condition of purifying efficiency in a catalyst at a time when this catalyst, capable of resolving any NOx even in an oxidizing atmosphere, is used. CONSTITUTION:A NOx resolving catalyst 1 is able to purify both of NOx and HC in the best condition at a time when each density of those of NOx and HC in exhausts is in a certain relationship. Therefore, the density of these exhausts of NOx and HC prior to catalysis should be set to the preset relationship. Accordingly, a sensor 7 in order to detect each density of NOx and HC is installed in front of the catalyst 1. In addition, there is provided an HC smoothing member 8, through which a time variation in the HC is equalized. With this constitution, any driving state of an engine is able to puridy the NOx so efficiently, so that exhaust regulation and fuel consumption control both are achievable simultaneously in a high level.
