PURPOSE:To produce a beta-1,3-glucan useful in the civil engineering, chemical or food industry, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective method for purifying a beta-1,3-glucan is characterized by cooling a hot solution containing the beta-1,3-glucan, produced by a microorganism and dissolved in an alkaline mixed solvent of water with a hydrophilic organic solvent, as necessary, further adding the hydrophilic organic solvent and neutralizing the mixed solution containing the deposited glucan. In the process for purifying the beta-1,3-glucan, the viscosity is hardly raised. Thereby, handleability is good and the method is an industrially excellent method for purification. The beta-1,3-glucan purified by this invention is capable of imparting viscosity increasing, water holding or swelling properties or plasticity to various substances and can advantageously be utilized in the field of chemical and food industries, etc. |
