1,195,621. Battery with topping-up device. JAPAN STORAGE BATTERY CO. Ltd. 4 Jan., 1968, No. 590/68. Heading H1B. A battery comprises a plurality of cells each closed by a cell cover 2 and having a tube 3 extending through the cell cover with its lower end opening at a fixed position in the cell to define the liquid level therein, a liquid supply container 4 which communicates with each cell through an individual hole 6 in the base of the container, which allows liquid to enter the associated cell, and a container cover 7 which covers the upper end of the tube and the liquid supply container. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the space between cover 7 and cover 2 is divided into two by partition 21 depending from cover 7 and cover 7 is removed to place distilled water in container 4 and then replaced. If the electrolyte level falls below the bottom of tube 3 water enters the cell through hole 6 whilst air leaves the cell through both tube 3 and hole 6 until the level reaches the bottom of tube 3 when air ceases to leave through tube 3 and pressure builds up inside the cell and prevents water entering through hole 6. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) cover 7 is cemented in position and has an opening through which distilled water can be added and a stopper to close the opening. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 a hollow member 15 carrying a flange 16 depends from cover 7. When the cover 7 is in position the flange 16 engages with shoulder 17 in tube 3 to secure the cover in position against vibration. In another embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) a cylindrical baffle depends from cover 7 over each hole 6 to prevent electrolyte splashing out through holes 6 from spreading so that it can run back into the cell through the holes. |
