Material is passed between rollers 20 and through guides 24 to the gap between a counter roller 2 and a measuring roller 1 provided with a rubber band 19. In operation, the angular position of a switch 6 as in Fig.1 relative to the spindle 9 is first set by an operator turning a knob 14 Fig. 2, graduated to show material lengths, to move an endless cord 10 and rotate a pulley 8 connected to the switch carrier 7. The roller 1 is then rotated in a clockwise direction on the spindle 9 by the moving material until a cam 4 on the roller contacts a roller 18 carried by an arm 5 on the preset switch 6 and moves the arm to operate the switch. Actuation of the switch causes the rollers 20 to move apart and cutters 21 to operate and sever the length of material pre-determined by the setting of the knob 14. The rollers 20 and guides 24 may however be dispensed with and the counter roller 20 driven but withdrawn before cutting. When the driving connection between the material and the roller 1 is broken by the cutters a spring 17 returns the roller to its starting position ready for the next measuring operation. In the initial position a pin 15 carried by the roller 1 abuts a finger 16 so that the measuring roller 1 may at its maximum rotate only one revolution on its spindle 9 until the pin contacts the finger again, after which the spring 17 returns the roller to its starting position.</p> |
