A continuously advancing track maintenance machine 1 has a vertically adjustable suction nozzle 10 for removing the ballast connected to a vacuum generator 3 via a cyclone separator 19 and a dust filter unit 25. Ballast drawn up by the suction nozzle 10 collects in the cyclone separator 19 and is then fed onto conveyor belt 23 by remote operation of openings 20 and 22 in an air lock chamber 21. Further suction nozzles can be provided for the removal of rubbish from the surface of the track. The machine can also be provided with tamping tools, a track lifting device and ballast excavators.
