Silencing of the suction or exhaust gases of a refrigerant compressor is achieved by admitting the gases to at least one chamber 5-8 having at least one throttle passage 18-20 defined between the chamber walls and a plate 17 co-operating therewith. The arrangement shown is for suction gas. The chambers 5-8, Fig. 2, are defined between a cupped member 4, a bent strip 3 secured to the compressor cylinder, and a motor support 1 (removed from Fig. 2). The plate 17 is secured to the outside of the cupped member 4. Gas is admitted to an antechamber 26 and flows through throttle passage 18 and holes 10,13 into chambers 5, 7. The gas leaves chambers 5, 7 through holes 11,14 connected by respective throttle passages 19, 20 to the chambers 6, 8 leading to the suction valve chamber. For silencing the exhaust gases, Fig. 4 (not shown) two chambers (32, 34) are inter-connected by a sinuous throttle passage (37-39) defined between the chamber walls and a plate (29) disposed in the chambers.
