A thermocouple (1) being one integral member has layers of conducting and insulating materials (3, 4, 6). The thermocouple has a single wire (2), coated with an insulating layer (4). The insulating layer is itself coated with a conducting layer (3) which is in contact with the wire (2) in the vicinity of a tip region (5) of the thermocouple, the tip region (5) forming the thermocouple junction region. The thermocouple is provided with an overall protective coating (6) of hard wearing material.
