The end section of the electrode has a radial boundary (12) carrying the fixing screw thread (2) and a concave face (4). The threaded portion ends at a point (7) below the rim (5) of the electrode sleeve (6). The chord (8) of the curved section between the thread end and the rim intersects the plane (10) of the latter at an acute angle (alpha) pref. between 0.01 and 0.07 deg. In an alternative embodiment the electrode face takes the form of a frustum of a cone. ADVANTAGE - Shape of electrode surfaces opposes decoupling under thermal and mechanical loading.
