The method for switching on the power take-off shaft (10) on a commercial vehicle by means of a hydraulically operated clutch (12) uses an electronic control unit (14), which triggers a solenoid control valve (15). This serves to control the pressure medium for the multiplate clutch (12) between power train (13) and power take-off shaft (11A). The speed of the power train (13) and the speed of the power take-off shaft are fed to the control unit. The difference between these two speeds is determined and by setting a reference curve this differential speed is reduced to zero within a predetermined period of time, the clutch pressure being controlled so that the measured speed differential is made to track the predetermined reference curve.
