A process is disclosed for monitoring an electric motor for thermal overloading in order to generate a switching off signal that switches off the motor when an admissible temperature limit is exceeded. In order to keep low the technical expenditure and the required total volume of an overload protector working according to this process, the motor power loss or a value proportional thereto is calcutated then integrated while the electric motor is switched on. The integration value is compared with a predetermined limit value and when the limit value (S1) is reached or exceeded the motor switching off signal is generated.
