Heading A5B [Also in Divisions B2, B5, C3 and D2] A method of producing a dispersion of microcrystalline collagen, at least 10% by weight of the microcrystalline collagen consisting of particles whose maximum dimension in any direction is less than 1 micron and being substantially free of individual tropocollagen units and degraded derivatives thereof comprises treating undenatured natural fibrous collagen with a dispersing medium containing an amount of acid corresponding to a hydrogen ion concentration of from 0.0025 to 0.03 mole per litre, the amount of acid being higher the higher the collagen concentration of the dispersion, and a dispersing agent consisting of (a) dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) or (b) mixtures of water and DMSO or (c) DMSO-free mixtures of water and water-miscible organic solvents in an amount not exceeding 65% by weight of the mixture or (d) a mixture of water, DMSO and at least one other water-miscible organic solvent, the mixture containing not over 75% of said other organic solvent and the remainder comprising equal parts of water and DSMO. The dispersion may be made either by adding the solvent to an aqueous gel of microcrystalline colloidal collagen or by adding the solvent directly to the mixture ofraw material and dilute acid. A gel formed with aqueous isopropanol may be used in cosmetics, for example face creams, sun-tan lotions, deodorants, shampoos or hair dressings. The suntan lotions may also contain UV absorbers. The dispersion may also be used as an ointment or antiseptic cream. A gel prepared with aqueous dioxane may be used to prepare freeze-dried mats of collagen which may be used as surgical dressings, disposal diapers, pads, sanitary napkins, sponges and foams.</p> |
