PURPOSE:To produce a tertiary amine in an extremely small amount of a copper-based catalyst eluted, not coloring by heating, having excellent stability of qualities. CONSTITUTION:An alcohol is reacted with hydrogen or ammonia or an amine of formula I (R1 is H or 1-3C alkyl; R2 is 1-3C alkyl) to form a reaction mixture of a tertiary amine of formula II (R3 is 8-36C alkyl or alkenyl; R4 and R5 are 1-3C alkyl or R3), which is treated with pressurized hydrogen under <=0.2 atm. partial pressure of water, <=0.1 atm. partial pressure of the raw material amine and 6-10 atm. partial pressure of hydrogen. In the case of continuously producing the tertiary amine, the vapor part is separated from the liquid part before pressurized hydrogenation is carried out at a specific temperature. |
