Chrysotile asbestos fibres are described which have a specific surface of at least 60m.2/g., preferably 60 to 80m.2/g., a reflectance of at least 72%, preferably 72 to 78%, and a pulpability such that not more than 1.0%, preferably 0.2 to 1.0% is retained on a screen with openings of 0.210 mm. They may be blended with a filler, e.g. titanium dioxide, and may be in the form of a pellet or a dry powder.ALSO:Chrysotile asbestos having specified values of specific surface, magnetite content, reflectance and pulpability is added to an aqueous dispersion of cellulosic fibres to make a paper furnish. The furnish may also contain a resinous or rubbery latex binder, e.g. a carboxylic-modified styrene/butadiene copolymer, a dye, a non-fibrous inorganic filler, e.g. titanium dioxide, talc, clay or mixtures thereof, or both binder and filler. The presence of the asbestos improves pitch control, sheet formation, filler retention, opacity, printability, dye receptivity, softness and latex retention. The pH of the furnish may be adjusted with alum. |
