A linear polyamide is stabilized by addition of an alkyl substituted diphenylamine, a phosphorous acid or a salt or ester thereof and a hydrogen, alkali-metal or alkaline earth metal chloride, bromide or iodide. The quantities of stabilizers added may be 0.1-1%, 0.02-1% and 0.01-0.1% respectively. They may be added to the polyamide monomers before reaction. The alkyl substituted diphenylamine may have at least one C4- 12 alkyl group per phenyl group. In typical Example (1) a salt of terephthalic acid and 2,2,4-and 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylene diamine is mixed with KI, a reaction product of isobutylene and diphenylamine and H3PO3 and polymerized with acetic acid as a chain terminator. In other examples polyamides are formed from terephthalic acid (2, 3), isophthalic acid (3), 2-ethyl-4-methylhexamethylene diamine (2) and 3-isopropylhexamethylene diamine (3) and stabilized with KI, (3), KBr (2), the reaction product of isobutylene and diphenylamine (2, 3), triiso-octyl phosphite (2) and sodium hypophosphite (3). |
