PURPOSE:To provide the projection type image display device provided with a uniform and bright display screen by reducing an uneven contrast caused by photoelasticity, and also, preventing a fall of brightness of a screen caused by a fall of a numerical aperture. CONSTITUTION:By a parallel ray selecting means consisting of plural optical paths in which a light absorbing film is provided in the periphery, light from a light source 2 can be converted to roughly parallel rays by absorbing the light which reaches the light absorbing film. That is, the light which does not contribute to brightness of a display screen is absorbed, and only the light of a good parallelism which reaches an opening part of a picture element of a liquid crystal display element 11 can be allowed to pass through selectively. As a result, the whole quantity of the light which is made incident on the element heated by light absorption, arranged on the emission side of the parallel ray selecting means 4 can be decreased. |
