PURPOSE:To develop a storage battery electrode excellent in initial activation, energy density and discharge voltage by using a rare earth element-Ni-Al-Fe-Co hydrogen storage alloy having a specified composition as a negative electrode for an alkaline storage battery. CONSTITUTION:An alloy having a composition represented by the general formula LmNiaAlxFeyCoz (wherein Lm is a mixture of rare earth elements; 70%<=La<=30% by weight, Ce<=5O%, Nd<=40 %, Pr <=30%, Sm<=5% and 1<=x+y+z<=1.5, 0.05<=z<=0.90, 0.1<y<0.7 4.5<=a+x+y+z<=5.5) is melted in a high frequency melting furnace followed by cooling and coagulating, and then pulverized, and an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol is added thereto to make the mixture into a paste form. The paste is charged in a Ni fiber base, dried, and pressed to form a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode. By using this negative electrode, a Ni positive electrode, and KOH aqueous solution as an electrolyte, an alkaline secondary battery having excellent performance is manufactured. |
