The invention relates to an apparatus for opening a disposable filter cartridge which consists of a sleeve made of thin steel sheet, with an end wall joined thereto by a beaded edge and a filter element accommodated therein. The apparatus comprises a frame with two elongate rollers which are mounted at a distance parallel to one another on the frame and at equal heights are provided with a groove which accommodates the beaded edge. The apparatus further comprises drive means for driving both rollers in one direction of rotation and a cutting roll which is mounted, so as to be rotatable about an axis parallel to the rollers, on support means which are fitted on the frame so as to be moveable transversly with respect to the plane through the rollers towards these and away from these, a cutting face of the cutting roll moving in a plane through the grooves in the rollers.
