<p>Treatment of expandable polystyrene to colour it and render it difficulty flammable while reducing its shaping time, is effected by mixing the expandable particles with plasticiser(s) and/or solvent(s) of high boiling point containing organic or inorganic filler(s), or with the plasticiser/solvent mixture to which are added low boiling point liquids, pref. solvent/non-solvent compositions, to form an easily distributed paste, before subjecting to pre-expansion, then treating in the usual manner. Solvents and plasticisers pref. used do not dissolve or plasticise the polystyrene at normal temps., but act on it at high er temps., pref. near the treatment temp., to form a gel.</p> |
