Thulium 171, for use in an isotopic power source, is produced by neutron irradiation within a nuclear reactor of thulium 169. The metal or oxide of thulium 169 are used in powdered or sintered form and compressed to near the theoretical density. After neutron irradiation, the material is removed from the reactor and the thulium 170 and 171 products allowed to decay. Subsequently, a separation of the residual thulium products from ytterbium is effected by an ion exchange process. As thulium 170 and thulium 171 decay at different rates the ratio of the atomic percentage of the two may be selected by determining the required decay period. |
