A headlight assembly for a motor-vehicle has paired lightsource units which respectively project a short-range stopped-down beam (26) and a long-distance beam (38). When referred to a vertical beam-setting screen (28) in front of the vehicle the isolux lines linking points of equal intensity are defined wrt a central vertical axis (VV) and a horizontal plane (HH). The stopped beam (26) is controlled by its reflector and/or front lens such that its upper light/dark boundary is defined by the lines (32, 34) and the beam (38) is set to give a lower boundary shown by the line (40). A small horizontal beam overlap (30, 40) is allowed to ensure optimum light distribution when both lightsources are energised for maximum illumination. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ensures that when both lightsources are in use for maximum penetration road-surface immediately in front of vehicle is not so strongly illuminated as to detract from driver's view of distant objects. |
