PURPOSE:To obtain an information recording and reproducing device with a mechanism for recording self diagnostic information without increasing its memory capacity and without erasing important error information. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted so that the failure of a device body 10 and the normal/defective of a signal recorded on a recording medium are detected 1, 2 and by a decision/control means 3, these error information are stored in a memory 4 and read from the outside 5 and when a fatal error occurs 3-1, the storage of error information thereafter is prohibited 3-2 and only the AND of unstored information is stored 3-3.
