PURPOSE:To surely pick-up a character pattern by detecting a largest part in the respective density changes in the plural lines of a gradation picture and adopting the intermediate part of the max. density change quantity as a binary level. CONSTITUTION:A picture processor 3 A/D-converts picture data into the gradation picture 10 and, then, obtains the binary level for binarizing the gradation picture from the gradation picture 10 so that the gradation picture 10 is binarized by the binary level. At this time, the respective density distributions on plural lines L-N which are previously set in the gradation picture 10 are obtained. The max. value of them is obtained and the intermediate point of the max. value is adopted as the binary level on the first line L. The gradation picture 10 is binarized, the character pattern is picked-up with the binary level as reference and the character pattern is compared with a master pattern registered in the picture processor 3 so that it is discriminated whether or not the character width of a ticking character B is more than a normal value. |
