QUATERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOSITION AND PROCESS

A water-soluble quaternary ammonium compound corresponding to one of the formulas RR'2R"N<+>X<-> and R2(CH3)2N<+>X<-> wherein R is an alkyl group containing 8-24 carbons, R' is methyl or -(CH2CH2O)nH in which n is 1-20, R" is methyl, benzyl, or alkylbenzyl, and X is chloro or bromo is used in admixture with at least one water-insoluble compound selected from fatty alcohols and amides, dialkylmethylbenzylammonium chlorides and bromides, and dialkylmethylamine oxides containing alkyl groups of 8-24 carbons to increase the ability of the water-soluble quat to wet hydrophobic surfaces when used, e.g., in dilute aqueous biocidal solutions. The water-soluble quat employed may be an available material or a product synthesized in the water-insoluble compound as a solvent.
