A rotary sheet-fed printing press has a drive motor and electronic control unit with a device for limiting the torque and current drawn. Between the motor control unit and the torque/current limiter a release device deactivates the latter if a speed increase is required. After a certain time, set by a timer, has elapsed, the limiter is switched back in. This is acceptable since there is a relatively large thermal time constant which prevents thermal damage. ADVANTAGE - Dimensioned sufficiently to overcome resistance torques but capable of short-term speed increase.
