An illumination device (9) is provided for the object positioned in a reference plane (E) and has additionally at least one light source (11) approximately in or beneath the reference plane and directed towards at least one longitudinal edge (5,7) of the object (1). A light source (10) may be arranged above the reference plane on the same side of the object as the additional light source (11).
