A thermosetting resin-dispersion water paint compsn. consists of (1) an aq. medium, (2) a water-soluble resin (pref. having water tolerance of at least 4, and surface tension as a 1% aq. soln. of not more than 51 dyne/cm) (e.g. an anionic resin with acid value 30-200 or a cationic resin with H equivalent 30-300 mM/100g); (3) a hydrophobic resin powder (opt. with an organic solvent) (e.g. acrylic, alkyd, polyester, epoxy, aminoplast, acrylic/alkyd or acrylic/polyester resin), (4) a curing agent, (5) a curing catalyst (0.1-10 wt.% of total solids content of the compsn.) of formula (I) or (II), where R1 is (opt. substd.) hydrocarbyl, phenyl, amino or carboxyl, R2 is H or Me, A is 2-4C alkylene, X1 is -CONH- or -OCH2CHOHCH2COO-; Y1 is -COO- or -SO3-, a is 0 or 1, n is 0-100, M is a mono or divalent anion, ammonium or lower amine.
