A rotational angle encoder (4) for the drive shaft (3) is linked by a bus (13) to an arithmetic logic unit (9) and comparators (7,8). The controller (1) is started by a reset signal (2) to activate (16) the approach value comparator (7). If the signal on the approach bus (11) is equiv. to the shaft angle signal, an output is delivered to an OR-gate (10). After a short interval a prescribed value memory (6) is activated (15). The corresp. comparator (8) gives an equivalence output to the OR-gate which stops the machine with a more precise signal. ADVANTAGE - Precise positioning of the printing press cylinder is achieved at favourable cost irrespective of mechanical ageing, variable ink viscosity etc.
