The shaft (2) and the radial bearing (1) in which it slides are sintered from similar cpd. materials. That of the bearing comprises a matrix of pref. Fe or bronze particles (7) with which pref. about 5 per cent of similarly sized microspheres (5) of harder metal or ceramic aluminium oxide or silicon nitride are mixed. Pores (6) occupying about 20 per cent of the vol. are distributed uniformly throughout the mixt. and filled with oil. The shaft is similarly hardened with metallic particles (10) interspersed among hard particles (8) and oil-filled pores (9). ADVANTAGE - Provision of hardened regions in surface of shaft prolongs its life at favourable cost.
