A machine adapted to determine static rotary imbalance comprises a mounting 1 to receive a body to be tested e.g. a vehicle tyre, carried on a ball M so that the body and the mounting move under the influence of static imbalance of the body from a balanced position in which the mounting 1 is horizontal, an optical deflector system having at least one pair of spaced parallel deflectors 4, 5 carried by an arm 3 on the mounting and disposed in the optical path between a light source 7 and a matt plate indicator 11, the parallel deflectors 4, 5 compensating for errors in the optical system. A circular scale 2 graduated from 0 degrees to 360 degrees is provided on the mounting 1 so that the angular position of imbalance can be determined from the indication given on the indicator 11. In an alternative arrangement, two pairs of plane parallel mirrors are employed, each pair detecting displacement of the body 1 about an axis orthogonal to that for the other pair of mirrors. |
