An ion exchange treatment method in the production or regeneration of an aqueous electrical discharge machining fluid, wherein untreated water is forced into a column (4) packed with an ion exchange resin and is passed through the resin phase inside the column (4) at a space velocity which is remarkably higher than ever, for example, at least 20 h<-1>. Accordingly, ''detrimental ions'' to the discharge machining are selectively and preferentially subjected to ion exchange, although electric conductivity of treater water on the resin phase outlet side is not lowered to a level in the prior art technique. By conducting the ion exchange treatment involving such a remarkably high space velocity, untreated water is circulated through the resin column until electrical conductivity of the treated water inside a tank (17) reaches a value desirable for the discharge machining. Accordingly, the quantity of treated water per unit quantity of the resin is increased without excessively subjecting the untreated water to ion exchange, and the service life of the ion exchange resin can be extended. |
