Laser engraving of the inner surface of the wall of a receptacle, wherein: a laser (2) with a wavelength chosen with respect to the nature of the material of the receptacle (1) is used so that the beam (3) may traverse the wall (1) of the receptacle by back projection; the layer (4) of material opaque to the wavelength of the laser beam (3) is applied in the engraving position on the inner face (11) of the wall (1) of the receptacle; and the inscription is traced by the laser beam (3) essentially focussed on the inner face (11) of the wall (1) of the receptacle. The installation used to put this method of laser engraving into service is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is used for the laser engraving of the inner surfaces of receptacles, notably for identification and decorative markings inside bottles. It can be readily automated for series production and has particular advantages for perfume bottles where an identification code is needed, offering advantages in that the coding is easily applied yet difficult to copy, modify or remove since it can be more readily camouflaged.
