Inorganic polymers useful as precursors to ceramics - prepd. by poly:condensn. reaction carried out in presence of porous solids and/or adsorbents

The prepn. of inorganic polymers (I) by polycondensation reactions with formation of gaseous by-prods. such as water, alcohols, amines, hydrocarbons or hydrogen in closed systems is claimed. The condensation reaction is carried out in the presence of porous solids and/or adsorbents. Also claimed is (i) silicon dimethyl imide, (Si(NH)NHCH3)x (ii) the use of (I) as a precursor for inorganic ceramics (iii) the use of silicon methyl diimide, Si(NH)NCH3 as a precursor for the prepn. of Si3N4 - and SiC/Si3N4 - ceramics. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) may be ground, moulded and pyrolised to form ceramics articles or used as a reinforcing agent for orgnaic polymers and ceramic materials and is useful as an adhesive for ceramic components. The prepn. of (I) does not require the use of high pressures, has a higher yield and produces a prod. that is not subject to as high a shrinkage rate as prior art processes.
