Press section of a papermaking machine, to extract water from the wet web, has a continuous belt impermeable to water to take the web from the fourdrinier or blanket. Web is then passed directly into a following shoe press and a press blanket passes exactly through the first pressure gap. Continuous water impermeable belt, of polyurethane, is passed over a further roller after the first pressure gap and before entry to the transfer gap. Web transfer is pref. supported by a pressure beam, slightly displaced from the web transfer point in the direction of belt travel. USE/ADVANTAGE - Assembly gives increased water extn. rate from the wet web and prevents the web from being dampened by moisture, in a reverse flow, after the first pressure gap.
