The spindles (23) are driven by separate motors to which is attached a form of generator to send impulses along a line to an analyser (4). The power supply line (5) is pref. three-phase current to separate motors and spindles (23). Pref. induction motors, which have stator and squirrel cage rotor have a coil (2) fitted close to the end of the rotor, and to lie between two armature slots, so a current is induced into the coil, forming a pulse generated current, connected to a diode rectifier (7), and to a line (6) running to an analyser (4). The pulses form each motor and spindle are timed to appear in sequence, and the absence of a pulse in a specific region may indicate an inactive motor with, spindle stopped. Pref. synchronous motors have an overload to stop the motor. A permanent magnet is attached to the spindle near the bottom bearing in the motor, and is alligned to the coil which generates a pulse signal, which is fed to the analyser (4) similarly. A circuit in the analyser may produce the alarm signal. USE - Each spindle is monitored electrically to ensure it is running, and there are connections to alarm appts. so a fault may be rectified.
