PRODUCTION OF CARBON FILLER

PURPOSE:To carry out the nitration treatment of pitch in a short time and high efficiency at a low temperature by nitrating a raw material pitch composed mainly of meso-phase pitch in liquid phase in a state preformed to fibrous form. CONSTITUTION:A raw material pitch composed mainly of meso-phase pitch is formed to fibrous form and nitrated with a nitration reagent in the presence of an acid catalyst. The obtained thermosetting nitrated pitch is carbonized to obtain the objective carbon filler. The above process is characterized by (1) the formation of the fibrous pitch having a diameter of <=20mum, (2) the use of nitric acid as the nitration reagent and sulfuric acid as the acid catalyst and (3) the nitration reaction temperature of from room temperature to the softening point of the meso-phase pitch, the reaction time of 15min to 5hr and the concentrations of the nitration reagent and the acid catalyst of 2-10 N and 0.2-1.0mol/L in liquid phase, respectively. A fibrous meso-phase pitch can be used by the use of liquid-phase nitration process using a nitration reagent containing an acid catalyst to enable the liquid-phase nitration in a short time at a low temperature, improve the reaction efficiency and give a pitch having high thermal reactivity to enable the carbonization with low energy.
