DIRECT INJECTION DIESEL ENGINE

PURPOSE:To suppress also generation of nitrogen oxides while reducing black smoke and particulates by activating diffuse combustion, particularly in the latter period of combustion, of a direct injection diesel engine. CONSTITUTION:Main combustion chambers are formed under a bottom surface of a cylinder head 15 in valve pocket sides, and also forming a subcombustion chamber 22 of small capacity in a top surface of a piston 12. Further, an inlet part of this subcombustion chamber 22 is constituted of a throttle passage 23. Fuel is injected toward the subcombustion chamber 22 by a fuel injection nozzle 20.
