PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the subject compound by making an alkylphenylindane coexist with a liquid aliphatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a cobalt compound, etc., and a halogen compound and bringing the alkylphenylindane into contact with molecular oxygen at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:An alkylphenylindane of the formula (R and R' are 1-4C alkyl and have one or more H atoms on the carbon directly bound to the phenyl ring; R1 to R3 are lower alkyl) (e.g. 1,3,3,6-tetramethyl-1-p-tolylindane) is made to exist with a >=2C liquid aliphatic carboxylic acid (preferably acetic acid, etc.) in the presence of a cobalt compound and/or a manganese compound (e.g. cobalt acetate or manganese acetate) and a halogen compound (e.g. chlorine or ammonium bromide) and then brought into contact with molecular oxygen (fed at a feed rate of preferably 0.1-5mol/hr expressed in terms of molecular oxygen based on 1mol compound of the formula), preferably at 115-220 deg.C under 100kg/cm<2>G pressure to afford the objective compound. |
